Delta 8 vs Delta 9 (Part 2): Differences, Similarities & Therapeutic Properties

Delta 8 vs Delta 9 Guide Part 2

Proleve offers recreational hemp products featuring two different versions of THC: Delta 8 and Delta 9. These types of hemp-derived THC share many similarities. Both are psychoactive, meaning they produce a “high” and are often used for recreational purposes. D8 and D9 are both believed to offer therapeutic properties as well, with many customers reporting positive experiences in reducing discomfort, anxiety, boosting mood, and facilitating relaxation.

However, there are subtle differences between these two compounds, both when it comes to the type of recreational experience they create, and the therapeutic properties that they’re most commonly used to harness.

Back in November, we introduced customers to these compounds with our original blog covering the differences between Delta 8 and Delta 9 THC. Now, we’re returning with Part II, providing updated information for everything you need to know about how to choose the best type of THC for your needs.

Similarities Between Delta 8 and Delta 9

Both Delta 8 and Delta 9 THC are hemp-derived cannabinoids, and they share various similarities including:

Chemical Structure. D8 and D9 are phytocannabinoids, plant-based molecules that bind with cannabinoid receptors in the brain to produce their effects. They share a similar molecular structure, which is why they produce similar benefits and effects

Binding with CB1. D8 and D9 THC produce their effects by binding with CB1 receptors in the brain. CB1 receptors are cannabinoid receptors that spread throughout the central nervous system, impacting mood, stress, sleep, and various other processes involved in mental health.

Psychoactive & Recreational. Unlike CBD or CBG, both D8 and D9 are psychoactive, meaning that they produce a “high” when consumed through hemp products.

Hemp-Derived. Both D8 and D9 are derived from hemp, though Delta 9 THC is found in higher concentrations in the hemp plant. Because they come from hemp, rather than marijuana, our Delta 8 and Delta 9 products differ in legal status from the types of cannabis THC products found in dispensaries.

Therapeutic Properties. Customers report using both D8 and D9 products for physical relief from pain, inflammation, stiffness, soreness, nausea, and vomiting. These cannabinoids may also boost mood, reduce stress, enhance relaxation, and support healthier sleep.

Differences Between Delta 8 and Delta 9

Most research on Delta 8 vs Delta 9 focuses on the difference in the “high” they produce. Though both produce recreational effects, the character of this experience can vary depending on which cannabinoid you choose. Read on to learn more about Delta 8 and Delta 9 highs, and to find out which cannabinoid may be better for you.

Delta 8: Delta 9’s “Nicer Younger Sibling”

In a 2022 survey, consumers--and especially beginners--described D8 THC as the “nicer younger sibling” of D9. By this, they mean that Delta 8 THC seems less likely to produce the types of anxiety and paranoia associated with high dosages of THC. This makes Delta 8 especially appealing for those who are new to THC products, or for those prone to the aforementioned negative side effects.

According to Leafly, many customers report that the Delta 8 high tends to be more “energizing” and “lighter” than the Delta 9 experience.

Due to this decreased intensity, Delta 8 may be preferable for those who prefer to use THC products while socializing or going about everyday activities.

According to a recent article by Forbes, consumers who prefer Delta 8 reported feeling relaxation (71%); euphoria (68%); and pain relief (55%).

Delta 9: A Higher-Potency Alternative

Delta 9 is generally reported to yield a higher-potency, more intense “high” than Delta 8. However, the two yield a generally similar recreational experience.

Some studies estimate that Delta 9 THC is roughly 50% more potent than Delta 8 THC. This difference in psychoactive intensity is due to the way in which Delta 9 binds with CB1 receptors. Though both Delta 8 and Delta 9 interact with these cells, Delta 9 forms a stronger bond with CB1, resulting in a more direct and intense impact on perception, thought, and cognition.

D9 THC typically creates what scientists describe as a “biphasic” effect. While lower doses tend to produce more “euphoric,” “energizing” results, higher doses tend to be more relaxing and sedating. Higher doses can also result in more undesirable effects such as anxiety. Delta 8, too, tends to be more energizing at lower doses, though this difference may be less pronounced. In either case, we recommend starting with a lower dosage, and slowly working your way up, until you achieve desired effects.
